Elmbank Students Visit Ben Nobleman Community Orchard

Posing in front of our orchard shed

Twenty seven teenage girls from Elmbank Middle School at Finch Avenue West at Martin Grove learned about making compost tea and apple sauce during an educational event in Ben Nobleman Park community orchard. The girls ate the apple sauce…but the compost tea was solely for the benefit of our 14 young fruit trees. Jane Hayes, of Garden Jane fame, taught the girls how to brush the leaves of our trees with compost tea to give them the nutrients they need and a extra bit of energy to help carry them through the winter. Harvest Festival attracts 400 visitors

Martial Arts Display with Crowd

Our little Ben Nobleman Park looks great with people in it. Over 400 people from our community and beyond flocked to our park for our harvest festival last week and it was a huge success.

Fruit Bowl & Hand

The food we supplied….pears, plums and apples from Bizjak Farms, finger sandwiches from Nortown Foods and Allen’s Apple Juice, disappeared in the first hour. Pine Villa Retirement Residence’s signature chocolate chip cookies lasted about 15 minutes.

Food Lineup

Loving Hut kept replenishing their fantastic vegan snacks from 5.00 pm till 6.30 pm then we had Mamma’s Pizza to share around. Thank you to both of those businesses for their incredibly generous contributions. Folks, if you like the food…go and visit the restaurants and support our wonderful local businesses! Community Orchard kicks off Edible Tree Tour 2009

Quiet little Ben Nobleman Park came to life on August 15, 2009 as the first stop in the popular Edible Tree Tour organized by LEAF, Not Far From The Tree, and Growing for Green. The tour attracted 115 participants – it’s the most popular tree tour in LEAF’s Tree Tour series so far.  Other stops included a local mulbery tree, front yard orchards, wild fruit trees in the Cedarvale Ravine, and an artistically grafted fruit tree. Participants were also able to watch a “live action fruit pick” organized by Not Far From The Tree. For orchard volunteers from Growing for Green this was a super day and a beautiful way to introduce fruit enthusiasts to the newly planted orchard trees. Come and visit us again!
