The Toddler Irrigation Team

Tonight’s irrigation bee was quite lively, even though many of our regular volunteers couldn’t make it. Instead, we had a new team help us nurture our newly planted fruit trees. Kallie and Jack (together with Kallie’s mom, Rochelle) joined in the action with Kallie helping to irrigate the trees and Jack supervising. They had so much fun that Rochelle said she’d tell other parents to bring their kids to the park on Thursdays at 4.30 during our irrigation bees so the kids can help out and learn at the same time. Now, don’t think that Kallie and Jack are our youngest volunteers. Nine-month old Alice, accompanying her dad during an irrigation bee a few weeks ago, still has that honour. But then again, you never know who’s going to show up next week.

New Irrigation System is Being Installed!

No more sloshing around the park with buckets of water filled from our homes. Finally, our irrigation system has arrived. Our group raised $2000 to help pay for the installation of this system which will eventually irrigate the whole of the park. The pop up sprinkler system will help us water the trees and we can also do spot watering with hoses. Thank you to Walmart Evergreen for helping to fund this wonderful system! The Birth of An Orchard

Toronto’s very first community orchard was planted on June 4, 2009. A crew of gardeners from Parks, Forestry and Recreation planted nine beautiful fruit trees, including 3 pear trees, 3 plums trees and 3 sweet cherries, in Ben Nobleman Park today.  This comes after almost a year of applications, community meetings, and planning by a group of volunteers from Ward 21.

Until the park’s irrigation system is re-activated, the volunteers will water the trees by hand, meeting on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 10.00 am and on Wednesdays, from 6.00pm to 6.30pm. If you’d like to join us, bring an empty bucket or two and meet us in the park.  We’ll collect water from a volunteer’s house across the road  to water the young trees.

After the planting, we discovered that the Ben Nobleman Park Orchard Project was awarded a Walmart-Evergreen grant that will cover the cost to upgrade the parks irrigation system. Thank you Walmart-Evergreen for making a special day even better.
