This week the scarlet red poppies in Ben Nobleman Park Community Orchard are putting on quite a show, heralding the next stage of beauty in our pollinator garden. First it was the hundreds of daffodils donated to us by Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation. Now the fabulous poppies and the magical Blue False Indigo. What’s next? As for the edibles, we wait in anticipation for our serviceberries to ripen. They are still in the greeny red stage. We will wait until they turn red first, then to blue-black (actually, to me a ripe serviceberry looks purple). The problem we found harvesting our serviceberries last year was that for every one put in a basket, five or more were put directly into our mouths. Sweet anticipation. In the meantime, some of us are clipping small amounts of winter savory to use in chicken dishes. Fantastic!
