Baby apricots in Ben Nobleman Park Community Orchard

We had quite a gang gather in Ben Nobleman Park Community Orchard for stewardship today. After a few rainy weeks the weeds in our pollinator garden had multiplied and seven of us hacked away with our weeding knives until the bed was spick and span. Susan and new volunteers Sharon and Margaret pondered the idea of integrating some of the weedy lamb’s quarters into their evening salads, but those edible weeds went into the compost pile anyway. Compared to those luscious looking rosy baby apricots on some of our trees, the lamb’s quarters simply don’t cut it. Nevertheless, we have to wait. It will be weeks before our apricots are ripe and ready to pick. Before that, we should be able to feast on serviceberries and maybe even cherries. Here’s hoping anyways. We still wait to see how much fruit is left on our trees after “June drop”, when fruit trees drop a lot of the substandard fruit so that the rest of the harvest can grow stronger. In the meantime, our mouths are still watering…
