Orchard People Pest Workshop 2013

It is much easier to prevent pest and disease problems in fruit trees than to treat those problems once they have begun. That was the main lesson learned in Orchard People’s May 25th workshop “Preventing Pest Problems in Fruit Trees” which took place in North York Community House’s Lotherton Orchard.

The workshop began with a presentation by Orchard People Director, Susan Poizner, outlining 7 easy ways to prevent pests and disease in fruit trees. The presentation was followed by a discussion with fruit tree specialist Ray Martinez. Then participants went out into the orchard to hunt for evidence of pest and disease.

The group did find four different types of problems including caterpillars, insect eggs, aphids and fruit tree canker and they discussed how, when caught at this early stage, these problems can be nipped in the bud.

“You learn to inspect your orchard carefully on a regular basis,” said Poizner, “but you make it a fun part of orchard care, wandering out with your morning coffee while you inspect and admire your trees. That is the only way to catch problems early on.”

While pest problems begin to be evident in May, by June diseases are starting to spread so on June 22nd, Orchard People will hold their next workshop – this time focusing more on identifying diseases like canker, fireblight, black knot and more. Students will receive hands-on experience in orchard disease control and will learn when and how to use organic sprays including Bordaux and Sulphur. For more information and to sign up click here.
