Workshop Reaches New Heights With Greening of Orchard Bunker Roof

Colin of Green Garage shows off our new green roof

Many people wonder about green roofs and how they are installed, so Growing For Green decided to explore these questions in our free green roof workshop on July 10, 2011, hosted by Colin Viebrock, owner of Green Garage. Thanks to a grant from Walmart Evergreen, we had the opportunity to install the green roof on our orchard bunker in Ben Nobleman Park. And it looks great!

The event attracted 20 people who heard about it through Now Magazine, Green Neighbours 21 , Not Far From The Tree , and our own Growing for Green/Community Orchard mailing list. (To subscribe, send a blank e-mail to communityorchard-subscribe@mylists.ca). During Colin’s talk, visitors had the opportunity to ask questions, and then everyone joined in to help assemble the green roof.

Our next summer event will be the ever-popular Edible Tree Tour on August 14, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We hold this tour annually with our partners LEAF and Not Far From the Tree. During the tour you’ll learn where to find wild and cultivated fruit in the Cedarvale neighbourhood. The walk, which will begin at St. Clair West subway station, will end in our Orchard at the Harvest Table, where people can also have a tour of our fruit trees. Keep an eye on our website for times and meeting places. Hope to see you then!
